Sue Ellyn Van Antwerp, 64, of Knoxville, TN, passed away on November 16, 2023. Sue Ellyn was born in Chicago, IL, on October 2, 1959. There will never be enough words to accurately describe the incredible woman that Sue Ellyn was.


Sue Ellyn graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Evansville in 1981 where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. In 1983, she graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University and went on to work in the nursing field for the next 40 years.


In 1984, Sue Ellyn married the love of her life, Dr. Bob Van Antwerp, and together they had two girls, Kate Ellyn and Maggie. The family moved from Chicago, IL, to Knoxville, TN, and in 1995, to Louisville, KY. After the passing of her husband in 2001, Sue Ellyn and the girls returned to Knoxville where she became the Clinical Practice Specialist and Education Coordinator at Parkwest Medical Center.


Sue Ellyn’s desire to teach and her ability to inspire ultimately led her to become a highly respected professor at several nursing schools including the University of South Carolina, the University of Tennessee, Pellissippi State Community College, King University, Lincoln Memorial University, and Tennessee Wesleyan University. She was passionate about caring for others and guiding her students to become the best nurses and people they could possibly be.


Sue Ellyn loved her family, loved her friends, loved her career, and most importantly, loved life. She was an inspiration to her students, her colleagues, and everyone she met. She never met a stranger, and everyone considered her to be one of their closest friends. She knew how special and what a gift each day was and made the best of every moment.


She Ellyn was creative, had a passion for cooking and good food, loved to bake, and was a wonderful entertainer. She threw the most incredible birthday parties for her girls and loved to host neighborhood block parties, cookie swaps, and fantastic get togethers with friends. She loved the mountains and loved the outdoors. She loved adventure and traveling to see all of God’s beauty.  Good music was a must and she loved dancing to her favorite artists and songs. Her laugh was infectious, and her smile could light up the room. She was truly a gift to this world.


Sue Ellyn, the most loving and incredible daughter, wife, and mother, was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Bob Van Antwerp; father, George Johnston; mother, Ellyn Hofmeister; and stepfather, Carl Hofmeister, Jr.


She is survived by daughters Kate Ellyn (Chris) Worthington and Maggie Van Antwerp; brother, Kevin Johnston; dogs, Mr. Beasley and Vito; and many, many close friends.


A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Sue Ellyn on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 4:00 PM at The Club at Gettysvue in Knoxville, TN. In lieu of flowers, Sue Ellyn requested that you spend time with your family and the people you love most.
